Approved by Shanghai Municipal People's Government on August 12, 1996, Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone (SCIP) is a professional development zone focusing on petrochemicals their derivatives since China's reform opening up. The zone is located in the southern tip of Shanghai the north shore of Hangzhou Bay, spanning Jinshan District Fengxian District, with a planning area of 29.4 square kilometers. At the end of 2009, the management area of Jinshan Fengxian Districts was enlarged to 36.1 square kilometers after being incorporated into the unified management of Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone.
